Our Black and Tan coonie is Fiona Glenann (character on the TV show Burn Notice). And that name really fits her flashy good looks and diva personality! Our Blue Tick/Gascon's full name is Winchester but he goes by Chester Blue and it fits his southern gentleman personality perfectly. Both our pups draw a crowd when we take them out with us. Coonies rule!

In 2006 a stray dog showed up at our Alabama farm. I recognized him as a Black and Tan Coonhound right away but it took a few weeks for me to recognize him as "my" dog. I tried to find his owner and I tried to give him away. He won me over in many ways but it was his goofy sense of humor that earned him his name of "Jack Black".

Its funny how sometimes they name themselves! Everyone wanted me to name my hound a Harry Potter name. I wanted to name him something related to the lightning blaze marking down his back. My sister said, "you know, Harry Potter got his blaze thanks to Voldemort" referring to the mark on Harry's forehead. So, my Blaze is officially Blazn' Thanks To Voldemort.

Our Redtick Coonhound came to us from an Oklahoma shelter with the name "Dudley", which he didn't recognize since he came in as a stray. At 8 months old he was infested with a variety of parasites, was extremely malnourished, and already had quite a collection of scars. He was also missing an ear.

Helga is the name of the coonhound at the beagle rescue. We named her that when she was pulled from the shelter. She was big, stoic and missing a toe on her back left foot - a perfect German frau. Now of course she's a happy and loving with eyes that peer into the soul. And someday a catless home awaits...until then she lives in a log cabin on top of a hill where she can run down the hill and sing - much like the opening of the Sound of Music...

My redtick was left on a friend's property and she thought I would click with him. He was really shy and maybe 6 months old but skinny. He finally wandered up and eventually consented to being petted. About that time a truck came rumbling down the dirt road with the sound of "You ain't nothin but a hound dog" sung by the King himself. So I called him Elvis.

We were born and raised in New Jersey, but rescued our beloved Treeing Walker Coonhound last summer from a shelter in southern Virginia. She came to us with the name Glory and we loved it so much, we kept it. It reminds us where we are from (north and south) and our flag "Old Glory." What could be more American than a coonhound?! Of course, after we got to know her we gave her a middle name, Trouble. Glory Trouble Russo -- we just LOVE her!

I was looking at puppies at our local shelter here in Portland Oregon and a litter of Treeing Walker Coonhounds arrived. Those are rare up here (unlike the south where I grew up) and I fell in love with a little adorable girl. She's only two months old and loves people so much and wants to play and sit in your lap and stare into your eyes. I like old fashioned names so we picked Mabel, which means lovable. Couldn't be more true. I'm really looking forward to getting to know this cute little dog with so much intelligence and know how already!
Mabel's a great name! Hope she's got a beautiful voice.

If you're looking for a good hunting coonhound, the shelter isn't always the best place to look. The hounds at shelters can be good pets and yes some can tree, but they don't always have everything else that is necessary for a good hunting dog.
Laura
4/15/2015 04:34:19 am
Also, keep in mind most shelters and rescues PROHIBIT their dogs that are up for adoption, pending adoption or successfully adopted to be used for ANY form of hunting!!!! Most also make you sign an additional paper stating that you WILL NOT use the dog for hunting purposes!!!!

I named by rescued bluetick coonhound from Kentucky, Scout -- after Scout Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. Her spunky personality and 'take no prisoners' attitude fits the name!! She was originally named Topanga but she's a true blue(tick) Scout :) 2/22/2013 01:25:21 am
Interestingly, the name of the dog pictured at the top of this blog article is Scout. I must admit, though, that she's not a coonhound. She's a Harrier. That picture was taken in our backyard before she was adopted.

Cindy
2/20/2013 07:56:29 am
My bluetick coonhound is named Harley (last name is Davidson) and the black and tan mix is named Abby. Harley is short for Harlequin, like the trashy romance novel, because she's so affectionate and will go with just about anyone. Abby is short for Abigail, a good ole southern belle name because she's so polite. The next dogs will be named Deimos and Phobos, after the Greek mythology. Naturally they will be hounds (hounds of war, get it?) Deimos and Phobos are sons of Ares, god of war. Yes, I'm a dork. 2/22/2013 01:21:59 am
Deimos and Phobos are also the moons of Mars (and of course Mars is the god of war). Note that these two moons revolve in opposite directions. Your two hounds will therefore be opposites. :-) 2/25/2013 11:05:26 am
Did you name him Trigger, Bandit, Rebel, or something else?

My Black and Tan Coonhound's name is Gallant. Well none of my coonhounds are members of the gentry--they're all on the uncouth side. My very loudmouthed redbone bearhound is named Clamour. My usband preferred the English spelling. Another hound is named Mudd (my husband chose that spelling too.) Mudd was a restless thing and had worn out a mud pit around his dog house. When we went to pick him up, all the other hounds at the kennel had nice grassy lawns, but Mudd had a muddy area with a puddle. Plus, I like saying "my dog''s name is Mudd." 4/23/2013 01:09:13 pm
Our English Coonhound was named "Dudley" by the shelter. No way was this crazy, happy-go-lucky (even immediately after surgery) pup a Dudley. He's now "Happy".

My Blue Tick CoonHounds name is Delilah. For short we call her Di. I found her through a shelter she was in a foster home and I had been wanting a hound for a while now since my boxer passed. The shelter named her Lea but it just didn't fit her. So her name became Delilah. 7/19/2013 10:00:55 am

Scout is the name of the dog pictured at the top of this blog article. She's actually a Harrier, not a coonhound or foxhound, but close enough. My wife took that photo in our backyard before she moved on to her adopter. "Scout" is definitely a good name for a sweet hound.

We will get our first family dog, a sweet bluetick girl we've already named Delta Blue. We wanted a southern-sounding name and our proximity to the 5 Rivers Delta just north of our home on Mobile Bay was our inspiration. Our kids are playing "coonhound" as I type. We just told them the happy news last night and they can't wait for Delta's arrival next week!

I am debating between a girl Bluetick or a boy...I like the boy hound look (bigger and bigger wider face) but I think a girl might be easier to train, what do you think? That's largely a matter of personal preference. Many hunters think females get down to work quicker--less marking and sniffing before putting nose to ground. Personally, I prefer the males. But that may be because I'm a herterosexual female human! Unaltered males do smell stronger than unaltered females, but I like the odor. Not everyone does.

My middle son which is 17 yrs old and is the most awesome and compassionate kid on this planet!! He just got a coon dog about a week ago from this man...which I really shouldn't even call him a man...he's more of a "well no cuss words on here" so I'll just leave it at that...he is a male coonhound...and is approx 8 months old...there isn't a bone on him that you can't see...he looks like he was barely fed, if he was even fed...can someone please tell me what would be a good dog food for him to help him get his muscle tone back and put the weight back on...we have an appointment with the vet but it's almost 3 weeks out even though he is extremely malnourished!! I would greatly appreciate any advise or reference to help get our dog back to a healthy state!! 10/24/2013 05:19:07 pm
It's very important that you not overfeed an emaciated dog. He needs to be fed very small meals, but much more often than you would normally do. He likely can't handle a large meal all at once, and it could kill him.
Coonhounds are not fussy eaters, so any decent quality food in increasing quantities should work fine. A few table scraps won't hurt either, but don't do that if you can't stand to have your hound begging at the table the way mine do. 4% fat cottage cheese is a good supplement.

Any thoughts out there on DNA swab testing?
redbones occasionally throw black and tan pups, although rarely more than half the litter, but your mix may have redbone background. the dna swab tests aren't much use for fine distinctions among hound breeds--there's just not enough data in the labs' database on hound breeds.

Thanks for the info. Coonhounds are usually more interested in smell than sight, so a whiff of coon or cat scent will set them off. Most have a large variety of vocalizations, and once you get to know the individual, you will be able interpret the sounds they are making. We live inside the Catskill Forest Preserve. I can tell whether they are barking at the UPS guy or a neighbor's cat or a bear pretty easily. If they are on a scent trail, they often keep their nose to the ground and don't look where they are going. There's been more than once when a bear was just ahead of us, close enough so that I could see it, and they were so interested in the scent trail that they didn't look up and see it until quite close.

I adopted Abbie Rose from a Connecticut rescue. She came from Georgia with the name Abbie and I added Rose to make it a bit more Southern sounding. I didn't know she was a coonhound mix until someone at the dog park told me his is a coonhound mix; same coloring as Abbie's. Abbie talks so much and has different barks for different situations. She never did fit any other description like Rottie, Dobie, Shepherd, though they may be in her as well. She has shorter ears than a full-bred coonhound and at just over a year, she's still 33 pounds. What's keeping her small, I wonder?
Some people just like their coonhounds on the small side, and breed them small. Others are just the runt of the litter. There is one lady in Trumbull who has two mini-coonhounds, one black and tan, one redbone. With short ears, it might be a curbreed. Send me pix and I'll make a guess:

Our coonhound was rescued from a busy interstate highway and kept in a kennel during our harsh winter. When the weather broke, he came to our house just for a meet and greet. He is still here and much loved by my husband andI and our energetic little cattle dog, Andy. He was named Nelson, after the golfer, Byron Nelson. He is sweet, determined and lazy, and has a voice the likes of which we've never heard before!

We rescued a Walker Coonhound quite a few years ago. She was in bad shape when we got her, skinny, hair falling out, had a bite taken out of one ear, so my husband decided that since she was the ugliest dog in the pound, she needed to be named after a "hottie" -- so she became Daisy Duke!

Our family has two hounds. Hunter, our dear little old man, was a rescue and he came with his name. He is a blue-tick coonhound mixed with beagle. We recently purchased a new puppy for our daughter, Hazel, is a Kentucky Walker Coonhound and we just adore her. Since I teach English Literature we decided to go with the name Hazel for alliteration! So we have Hunter and Hazel the hound dogs!!! We love our "hounds-kids" and they add so much joy to our family!

I have two TWC. My male we found he was only about five weeks old. We wanted to give him a name unique something no one else has used so we came up with Ojibwe( my kids are Ojibwe) My other TWC is a rescue we named her Waffles because everytime she heard me say it she would come running.

I have a black an tan /blue tick name Duke after the original Duke John Wayne and a basset /black an tan cross we call a "Boonhound " best mix ever in my book! We named him Otis after a movie character in Devils Rejects, a murderous redneck lol :) my family raised, hunted, and showed Coonhounds and Beagles and we always gave them hillbilly redneck type names. Cletus, zeak, Jedediah, jimbob, haddie, skinner, sugar, honey, ol blue, Clyde, Elmer, bocefus (spelling?) Scrãper, croaker ... I'm sure if I asked my dad he would remember more of them. He had dogs from 10 yrs old and hunted them, he was just like in the movie where the red fern grows. I went on a few night hunts with my dad and uncles dogs and ran a pack of my grandfathers beagles it was just awesome! I was 13 and my brother was 12 . He went on to show hounds and enter shows /hunts and did pretty good! Good times! There's just something wonderful about having hounds! Their soul shows! I'm a dog groomer and see all kinds of the small fancy dogs and they just don't have the same spark a hound has!

Our bluetick's name is Edgar. When deciding to rename him, I had a very hard time since I am a teacher. We went back and forth on several names. I knew I wanted it to be connected to what I teach (literature and language), so we finally agreed upon Edgar, as in Edgar Allen Poe. The best part is he kind of dark, odd, and quirky blue, so the name fits him perfectly! Then, there is Edgar from the show Oddities, and the puzzle pieces fit together even more!

Just rescued my AEC from our local shelter about a month ago! She was definitely trained at some point as she knew "sit" and "paw". She is a black and white with ticking. The shelter had named her Daisy, which I couldn't see keeping her with, she wasn't a Daisy at all! Thought about a name for a couple days and out came Dallas! The Cowboys are my fav football team...The first name was easy, the middle not so much, took me 3 weeks to settle on her middle name being Rae, so we have a Dallas Rae and I wouldn't trade her for anything, although mouthy and manner-less at times, along with her high drive to tear apart any and everything in my back yard (from the trampoline cover to the ground inserts to control weeds) she is one great dog and a hell of a runner! Had she been a boy her name probably would have been Dez :)

My first blue tick was about 7 years old when he came to me. He was one of those big, stocky boys and was silent (for a hound) and watchful. I named him Billy Jack after the 70s anti-hero. After I lost Billy Jack, I adopted a blue tick from a kill shelter. He is a leggy, rangy, silly boy who loves to hug. I named him Billy Jack's One Tin Soldier and I call him Soldier. My first black and tan I named Maya because I had been to an exhibit of Mayan artifacts the day I found her. After I lost her, I bought a B&T puppy and named her Maya's Amazing Grace. After I lost Grace, I adopted a B&T female from a shelter and her name is Maya's Jessa Grace. Cannot imagine my life without coonhounds! Most wonderful dogs EVER!

We have 2 English Redtick Coonhounds. The father's name is "Z" due to the marking on his forehead. His daughter is very sassy and is like a little assasinator so we named her "Ziva David" from the show NCIS.

Our baby red bone coon hound is named penny. She's our pretty penny, lucky penny, penny poo, dirty penny, and shiny penny. But her favorite nickname is "good girl." She wasn't worth much to anyone else when we found her dumped at out doorstep, but we think every penny counts. She's one in a million.

I just got a half bloodhound half walker a few days ago and decided on the name Beau. He is Black and Tan with 4 white paws & a white tip on his tail, 7 weeks old, and already the sweetest boy! He absolutely adores people and loves nothing more than sticking his nose right up to your mouth, nose, and neck to sniff. I was warned against getting a hound dog (and was told to get a retriever) because hound dogs "are virtually untrainable" (according to friends), but I couldn't resist Beau's floppy face and huge ears! I'm in love! 4/5/2016 03:55:41 pm
I know someone who has trained coonhounds to win at the very highest levels of AKC Obedience competition. I have trained a foster dog for such competition, and even used her as a demo dog to demonstrate competitive Obedience at a local Pet Expo. She didn't get to go into real competition because right after we entered her in her first show she was adopted.

We just recently adopted a blue tick female a couple of weeks ago. Her name started out as Mollie. We have 4 small indoor dogs and when they go out she thinks they are play toys. The little ones do defend themselves and Mollie has squealed from one grabbing her floppy ears a time or too. She jumps, bites, and gets angry if you don't "love" on her. We are trying to fix that. Long story short because of all her antics she is now called Mollie Mayhem!

My son's red bone coon hound puppy is named Plato. My son is going off to graduate school to study Classics, so he wanted to name him after an Ancient philoso'fur'. :-) I leaned toward Banjo after a Jimmy Durante character but Plato it was. I will miss both he and my son come September.

My best buddy & longtime companion passed away almost two years ago. He was a beautiful redbone-bloodhound mix, 15 years old & his name was Otto (pronounced auto). We rescued him from animal control. I named him after Otto, the old hound dog in the Disney cartoon movie Robin Hood. That was one of my favorite movies growing up, so it seemed perfect to name the absolute best dog (& friend!) in the entire world after one of my favorite characters. He was so special & I miss him so much! There will never be another one like him. We grew up together : ) My little sister even learned to walk toddling thru the yard, holding on to his back. We never had to worry about running up on snakes or bears as kids, because he was always by our side protecting us. The day he died, there was a part of me that died too... my childhood.

I have 3 dogs. Bella is a red nose pitbull. My husband wanted a pitbull pretty badly when we met. Then recently we acquired Bear. He is a bluetick/ lab mix. He was left with 3 of his siblings on the side of the road. Now we also have Badger. He's a red tick/ border collie mix from an accidental breeding. Both of our boys are super smart and sweet and Bella seems to love them alot! I don't like how people just dropped off Bear. I think him and his siblings deserved much better.

My first Treeing Walker Coonhound was Banjo. My second is Boo. I had already picked out the name Boo before I met him, but it turned out to be perfect. He's a very shy, fearful boy, very much like Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Chester Saint Puppernickel; patron saint of garbage, rain water, and mystery was found starving and wondering in Detroit Michigan by my father about three weeks ago. Using his nails, that I'm sure had never been trimmed, Chester grabbed my fathers jeep door and pulled himself into the vehicle through the jeep window. My father says that there was no amount of pushing the dog out of the Jeep that would result in the dog continuing to wonder free. When they got back to my fathers house Chester waited patiently to be adopted. Four days later, he was scheduled to be dropped at the pound, but we met first and I instantly fell in love. Now I am a dog dad. I cant believe what a fantastic friend he is, and so intelligent! I am now trying to keep him well fed and active, however he has serious separation anxiety. My cousin whom is living with me is usually home during the times that I work yet, any time I leave the house the baying and often brutal mystery ensues. It is beginning to be a problem for my cousin... Apparently, the moment I walk in the door he becomes the godsend angel that I now love, making it difficult for me to curb the behavior as I never witness the "bad" Chester. They believe he is just about two years old. I know this is a name stream but if anyone has any resources on breaking treeing walker coonhounds of separation anxiety I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank -you for reading my ramble.
Separation anxiety is not a coonhound-specific problem, but some of the potential fixes I recommend are mostly for scent hounds. Alway take a stray to a vet to be checked out. Something may be hurting or he may have worms that make him chronically hungry, and it may be easy to fix that way.

As a child I grew up in Mississippi and my family had a lot of Coon dogs. The are 2 of them that I have a very vivid memory of, There was Pot licker who got his name from the giant pot the was in the pen with them because he always licked to get his water. Then there was Cricket which was one that I picked out. She jumped around like a real Cricket, My dad would train her to hunt Coons by having an old coon fur or he would let her out to play with me and we would play hide and seek and she would always win. I sure would love to get another one to have as a loving pet . The are the most loyal and loving dogs even though they talk a lot.

My Foxhound was Independence- full name was Colonial Declaration (his GSD brother at the time was Revolution-full anme was Colomial Insurrection), my black and tan was Selah (after the husband of Anna Smith Strong, who was one of George Washington's spies in the American Revolution, whom I'm distantly related to) and my TWC was Saoirse (and not after the actress...her full name was Freedom Without Restraint, which is what Saoirse means).
