Why give to our "Long Ears Alive!" fund to save sick and injured hounds in shelters?
Because hounds need help desperately, more than almost all other breeds. Coonhounds and foxhounds are sadly overlooked by adopters in shelters and pounds all over the United States and Canada, even though they are exceptional dogs, loving, social, entertaining companions and house pets. Most non-breed-specific rescues refuse to take in coonhounds and foxhounds because they wait for adoption in foster homes for months and months, instead of weeks for more popular breeds. And there are nowhere near enough rescues specializing in coonhounds and foxhounds.
This is truly shocking when you consider their proud history. |
Give to our “Long Ears Alive!” fund to help sick and injured coonhounds and foxhounds waiting treatment in shelters.
Read our simple rules. |
All-American breed dogs should be popular, right?
Did you know that the coonhound breeds originated here in America, unlike those celebrated and popular breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers, all originating overseas? Foxhounds were brought here from Britain and bred by George Washington, among others, and became today’s American Foxhound. Yet in shelters and pounds, prospective large-dog adopters hurry past our hopeful long-eared hounds. Our special dogs are ignored. It's scandalous but true.
The lack of interest in these amazing All-American breed dogs is shameful. Where are all those millions of “Made in America” believers? They are looking at British, Asian, and German breeds but passing by ours without even a glance. Really? Yes, really.

Sick and injured hounds in many shelters
have little hope of survival Because adopters continually overlook them, sick or injured coonhounds and foxhounds in shelters are less likely to be provided the treatment needed to help them become healthy and adoptable. Too many are euthanized for readily-treatable medical conditions. Where a popular Golden Retriever or a Yorkshire Terrier may get treatment for diarrhea or a superficial wound or an unsightly fatty growth, a coonhound or foxhound might not, even in the same shelter. Instead these sad All-American hounds are soon taken on that devastating one-way walk down the dark hallway, where their beautiful voices are silenced forever. |
Coonhound Companions funds their survival, hoping for adoptions
The Coonhound Companions “Long Ears Alive!” Fund is the only one dedicated to helping save shelter coonhounds and foxhounds with treatable medical conditions. LEA! has helped to treat hounds with conditions such as heartworm, mange, and gingivitis. We've helped hounds with broken legs and shotgun wounds and emaciation, cherry eye and skin tumors among other illnesses.
We’ve helped senior hounds and puppies and purebreds and mixes all get treatment so they become a bit more interesting to potential adopters and rescues. We try to level the playing field for our beloved long-eared, song-filled dogs.
And it's working! We have helped to save scores and scores of them.
How do we do it?
Our team seeks out injured and ill coonhounds and foxhounds in shelters by using Facebook, especially on our Coonhound Rescue Network page. Sometimes shelters or rescues contact us. We pledge modest amounts to individual dogs and inform local rescues of our pledge. When rescues pull dogs and take them to the veterinarian for treatment, that same day we make the pledged payment to the rescue's account with the vet. We ask for follow-up reports and photos and to be informed when the dog is adopted.
