About Us
In The Beginning
In 2010, an online chat group of Coonhound fanciers began discussing the sorry state of Coonhounds and Foxhounds in North America.
All dogs were originally bred for a purpose, yet most breeds fulfill many roles in society far beyond their original development. Accordingly, most Coonhounds (and Foxhounds that have been continually interbred with Coonies since colonial days) never meet the game they were bred to pursue. Further, hundreds of lost/abandoned hounds are found at the end of each hunting season - most in dire condition. Given that they are not well-known outside of hunting circles and rural areas, these dogs are often overlooked (and euthanized) at shelters as would-be adopters are directed towards more popular breeds.
This shunning of hounds is puzzling to us Coonhound lovers who know our hounds to be loving, sensitive family companions of the best sort. Most never knew a stranger and they are sweet on kids of all ages. They love other dogs. They make us laugh on a daily basis. We wanted to share our experiences with others and set out to make a difference in the lives of so many deserving hounds.
The Long Ears Story
In 2011, we created the Long Ears Campaign - a series of posters that portray Coonhounds and Foxhounds as adoptable family pets. We also established this website; started the Long Ears Blog; and obtained our 501-c3 status in 2016. Since then, we have expanded our efforts to social media where we now perform the majority of our activities with a focus on funding veterinary treatment for sheltered Coonhounds and Foxhounds with treatable medical conditions in order to improve their odds for rescue and adoption.
Based in La Cross, WI, we are an all-volunteer organization with all operating expenditures and programs supported through private donations and ongoing fundraising activities. Our EIN number is 81-1202501.
