Long Ears Alive! Fund
The Coonhound Companions “Long Ears Alive!” (LEA) Fund is the only one dedicated to helping save homeless coonhounds and foxhounds with treatable medical conditions. LEA! has helped to treat hounds with conditions such as heartworm, mange, and gingivitis. We've helped hounds with broken legs and shotgun wounds and emaciation, cherry eye and skin tumors among other illnesses.
We’ve helped senior hounds and puppies and purebreds and mixes all get treatment so they become a bit more interesting to potential adopters and rescues. We try to level the playing field for our beloved long-eared, song-filled dogs.
And it's working! Long Ears Alive! fund has helped to save hundreds of them since 2012.
How do we do it?
Our team seeks out injured and ill coonhounds and foxhounds in shelters by using Facebook, especially on our Coonhound Rescue Network page. Sometimes shelters or rescues contact us. We pledge modest amounts to individual dogs and inform local rescues of our pledge. When rescues pull dogs and take them to the veterinarian for treatment, that same day we make the pledged payment to the rescue's account with the vet. We ask for follow-up reports and photos and to be informed when the dog is adopted.
